Economic and Commercial Affairs
Purpose: As the representative office for South Africa’s Department of Trade and Industry, the economic and commercial affairs office is responsible inter alia for:
- Coordinating South Africa and the United States’ (US) economic relations through participating in inter-governmental processes and platforms.
- Implementing South Africa’s trade policy, with particular focus on developments in the WTO, encouraging South-South co-operation, North-South co-operation and economic growth and development in Africa.
- Facilitating access for South African goods and services into the US market through ensuring optimal utilization, by South African exporters, of existing preferential trade mechanisms, as well as contributing the South African perspective to the policy review processes of those mechanisms.
- Facilitating collaboration between South African and US industry, with special focus on the sectors espoused by South Africa’s Accelerated Shared Growth Initiative (ASGISA) and National Industrial Policy Framework.
- Marketing South Africa as a prime destination for US foreign direct investment as well as providing information on South Africa’s business climate and the regulatory framework.
- Assisting US companies to source South African suppliers and products and find potential investment partners.
The economic and commercial affairs office has other representation in the Chicago and New York Consulates-General.
